You’ve decided to work from home, and sell products drop shipped to your customers from a warehouse. That’s fantastic! No doubt you also want your home business to be successful as well. That’s great too. Before you get started, here are a few things to consider so that your new venture is a great adventure, and not a disaster.

First of all, you need to remember that you are working from home. The key word to remember here is “working.” People often become fixated on the “home” part of “working from home,” and forget that the object of the game is in fact to make money. Making money requires work. Approach your new venture the way you’d approach any new job, where the fringe benefits are an incredibly short commute, a pleasant and familiar work environment and a (very) relaxed dress code.

If you’re going to work from home doing dropshipping create the right space to get your work done. Setting up a home office will not only help you be more productive, but will also encourage you to keep focused on the tasks at hand. Setting up a home office includes everything from ensuring you have a tax identification number, to considering incorporation, to making sure you have pencils, paper and a functioning computer. Ask yourself if you have enough space in which to work, easy access to communication equipment (i.e.: your phone, fax and email), and a place and method for filing paperwork.

Since your place of work is now also your place of relaxation, you need to be careful that your work schedule doesn’t get taken over by your private schedule, and vice-versa. Decide first of all what will constitute a “full week of work.” You can always refine this number as you get a better feel for how long it takes you to get things done. You may want to start with a sales goal, determine how much time on average needs to be devoted per dollar sold and shipped, and let that help determine how many hours you want to work. But be realistic: after all, there are only 168 hours in a week and some of them will be needed for eating and sleeping.

Once you’ve established how many hours a week you want to put into your work, consider how you want to put those hours together. Are you the sort of person that can only work for two or three hours at a stretch? You may be better off working a couple of hours each morning and afternoon. Maybe you would rather put in a ten hour day for four days straight and then take a long weekend off. Are your kids away at school Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 4:00? Those school hours may set your work schedule for you. But whatever you decide, you ought to stick to that schedule as much as possible, and treat any variation from it the same way an employer would, as “personal time” that needs to be made up or treated as a “vacation.”

Likewise, don’t allow your work schedule to overrun your personal schedule. You probably decided to work at home to spend more time with family and friends, not less.

Remember: there are a great many benefits from working at home selling drop ship products. As long as you remember to treat this new endeavor as work with great fringe benefits, and not an extended vacation, you’ll be happily on your way to developing a new business.
